Tarigonda Vengamamba

Tarigonda Vengamamba History, Details

Another sparking jewel among the devotees of Lord Sri Venkateswara is an exceptional woman called Tarigonda Vengamamba. Vengamamba was born in 1730 in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh and was dedicated to God from a very early age. Her detachment from worldly matters worried her family, who decided to ‘rescue’ her by getting her married. But her husband died young and she dedicated her life to God in Tirumala.

Lost in love of God, by her twentieth year, she had compiled over 100 poems in His praise. The frame of her deep devotion inspired many prominent people of that time and moved them to make significant donations to the cause. Considering service of the poor equivalent to the service of God, Vengamamba utilized it all for providing free food and water to the poor devotees who visited the temple. Even today, in Tirumala, her name is synonymous with devotion, charity, and love for humanity.
