Sriperumbudur Temple

Sriperumbudur Temple is dedicated Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu here was known by Sri Adi Kesava Perumal. This Temple is located at a distance of 60 km from Chennai. This is the birth place of the holy saint Ramanuja charya. He stayed here for four months during his childhood.

Sriperumbudur Temple Legends

Interesting things associated with temple construction. The four gigantic pillars at the entrance of the temple are designed with yali sculptures on them. At the time of temple construction, the workers were not able to lift the pillars as they so huge and they gave up. Next day morning, they are surprised to find the pillars installed at the right place. They came to the conclusion that some giants might have done this installation. Hence, this place got the name Sri Perum Budur, which means Great Town of giants.

Once, the princess of Kancheepuram was possessed by a ghost. The King and his staff tried a lot to save the princess all their efforts went vain. It was Ramanuja Charya who cured the princess. Demon requested Ramanuja to place his feet on princess’ head so that he can leave her. As soon as he kept his foot on her head, the ghost left her breaking the topmost branch of a tree nearby to show the indication in leaving.

Sriperumbudur Temple History

This temple was built by Cholas later renovated by Vijayanagara Kings. It is known from the inscriptions that in the year 1572 A.D, Srirangaraya I from Viajayangara dynasty did the temple renovation. In the year 1556 AD, Rama Raya gifted 31 villages to support temple activities.  The Golden Vimana was built in 1912 A.D.
