Aadhi VarahaSwamy Temple

Aadhi VarahaSwamy Temple Tirumala

Sri Aadhi Varahaswamy Temple Tirumala, is located to the north of the Sri Venkateswara temple, on the banks of Swami Pushkarini.

The presiding deity is Varaha Swami, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of a boar that was staying on the hills when The Lord descended unto earth.

HE had to take permission from Lord Varaha to stay here and grant HIM (Lord Varaha), the privilege of first view by the visiting pilgrims and first Naivedyam (sacred offering of food to Lord for consecration) in return. Thus it is imperative that pilgrims visit Sri Varaha Swami first and The Lord, only later. According to legend, Tirumala was originally the Adi Varahakshetra (place belonging to Sri Adi Varahaswami).

Lord Sri Venkateshwara took up residence here, with the permission of Sri Varaha swamy. According to Brahmapurana, Naivedyam (food offered to God) should first be offered to Sri Varaha swamy. Pilgrims should visit Sri Aadhi Varahaswamy  temple prior to Sri Venkateswara temple. According to Atri Samhita (Samurtarchanadhikara), Varaha Avatara is worshipped in three ways as Adi Varaha, Pralaya Varaha, and Yajna Varaha.

The idol of Sri Varaha swamy in Tirumala is that of Aadhi Varaha, as it resembles the description of the Adi Varaha Murti in Vaikhanasa Agama Sastras.

The Aadhi VarahaSwamy temple is dedicated to the Varaha incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to be the guardian of the Tirumala Hills.

According to legend, Lord Venkateswara had to take permission from Sri Adi Varaha Swamy to stay in Tirumala, which was originally Adi Varaha Kshetra (the home of Sri Aadi Varaha Swamy).

Please note that a Pilgrim should take bath in Swamy Pushkarini and then Visit Sri Aadhi VarahaSwamy Temple before main deity Lord Sri Venkateswara Darshan in the Sanctum of Sanctorum. Only then it is called as a complete Tirumala Visit.
